When the family changes and the home no longer works

Making a difficult choice

Backstory

This is the story of a family who worked with Greyhaven a few years ago. They had a child who received a traumatic brain injury at birth. Their story illustrates the saying, “where there is a will, there is a way.” They had cared well for him day after day despite the inconvenience of having all of their bedrooms on the second floor. Eventually, the child had grown too large to safely carry up and down the stairs (the mother actually injured her back doing this), so they reached out for some options.

Process

We met and took measurements of their garage, office, rec room, utility room, and kitchen, which you can see below.

As they requested, we explored changing the garage into a master suite and the old rec room into an accessible bedroom with an attached bathroom suitable to the injured child’s needs. The old office was to become a playroom and part of the utility room was made into a hallway while leaving the appliances where they were.

The family was impressed with the possibilities revealed in the first proposal, but ended up deciding it would be easier to sell their home and find a single level home. We were glad to help them make a difficult decision even though they didn’t build with us because sometimes that is what’s best for the family.
